When Will the New Moon
and Sabbath be Past?
Today, if you are anything like me, you may hear a lot of banter regarding whether the New Moon Day is a worship day in the same way as the Sabbath. Did you know that in the days of the prophet Amos they knew the answer, but didn’t like it. For in their hearts, they cried out, “When will the New Moon be past that we may sell corn, and the Sabbath that we may buy wheat?” I anticipate that this short Scripture word study will help to make an informed decision.
Amos 8:5 presents us with a unique picture of a conflicted Israel at the time of the prophet Amos. While going through the motions of obedience to Yahuah, in their hearts dwelt quite a different scenario. Their discontent and longing for the New Moon and Sabbath to be over exposed their true heart’s desires. It also revealed that the Torah Law of Israel required them to cease from their labors not only upon the Sabbath day, but also on the Day of the New Moon. Please take a moment to consider the evidence presented by clicking in the following Word Study box. Strikingly, you will NEVER be taught this this from the pulpit of any Christian Church. So the question shouted from the conscious of a true disciple should be WHY?
Here we find Yahuah, the Eternal Father speaking to Amos the prophet. He is describing the disobedient hearts and evil ways of Israel toward Himself, with their desire to deceive the people for profit. The significant points brought out in this verse recognize:
- The New Moon Day is a qadosh (sacred) worship day, all day, from sunrise to sunset, in the days of Amos the prophet, as it was required in the Torah.
- The seventh-day Sabbath is a qadosh (sacred) worship day, all day, from sunrise to sunset.
- Israel desired for the New Moon and Sabbath to be over so they would be free to buy and sell grain.
- Israel actually looked forward to deceiving the poor and unsuspecting for their own profit, through the process of measuring grain.
- The reason they were desirous for these appointed days of worship to be past, is because they stood as obstacles and burdens in their way of buying, selling, and turning a profit. But also, because the hearts of Israel were cold, not seeking to be honorable and obedient to Yahuah. They longed to do their own evil ways during these sacred days. For when mankind has no love for his Creator, he does not love His creation, or the symbol of His creation. And as a result, does not seek to obey or worship Him. No matter what it is, if our hearts our not in it, mankind feels both the New Moon and the Sabbath to be a burden rather than a blessing. This was the case for Israel regarding both the New Moon and Sabbath Days.
Some insights with regard to the sacredness of both the New Moon and Sabbath can be gleaned from this short revelation. The same commandment that applies to how to keep the Sabbath sacred (qadosh), also applied to the New Moon day. For if the New Moon Day had not been a qadosh (sacred) worship day, then these Israelites of Amos’s day would not have been secretly wishing that it would be past, so they could buy and sell grain.
New Moon as a Worship Day
The true seventh-day Sabbaths are tied to New Moon days throughout Scripture, showing that New Moon days are in a special class of worship day all by themselves. So here we have further support in YAHchezq’EL (Ezekiel) that the east gate of the inner court of the Temple was to be closed on work days, yet on the qadosh (sacred) days of the New Moon and the Sabbath this gate would always be open, providing a way of entry into the set-apart places of Yahuah. Thus it is that the Sabbath and the New Moon are treated exactly the same as required worship days of Yahuah, in contrast to ordinary work days.
But with this said, the New Moon must not be confused with the Sabbath, because it is never the seventh-day. Rather, the New Moon day stands alone as the the new month, day one marker. All month dates, seventh-day Sabbaths, and Feast Days, are counted from the New Moon Day. Refer to article, Sabbath’s Consistent Lunar Months.
Thus says the Yahuah, Elohim: “The gateway of the inner court that faces toward the east shall be shut the six working days; but on the Sabbath it shall be opened, and on the day of the New Moon it shall be opened.” YAHchezq’EL (Ezekiel) 46:1
Likewise the people of the land shall worship at the door of this gate before Yahuah in the Sabbaths and in the New Moons. YAHchezq’EL (Ezekiel) 46:3
Simply because we have not understood until recent years just how sacred the New Moon day is to our Creator and the Messiah, does not make it null and void. The Reformation begun with Martin Luther, will continue until the Second Coming. So as these truths are revealed from the pages of Scripture, it is an opportunity to recognize that they are being restored to His followers. They will be received only by those who are willing to first hear and then search the Scriptures to see if these things are so. All this in preparation for the Second Coming. Their great desire to be obedient followers is driven by their great love for their Creator and Messiah Redeemer.
Unfamiliar is no more synonymous with wrong
than familiar is synonymous with right.
Now that we have established that the New Moon is a significant monthly worship day to Yahuah, it is important to explain what ramifications this presents for the calendar.
The Creator’s Calendar is in the shamayim (heavens) and was designed to beacon for all mankind, His set-apart days of worship. Thus, it is that mankind has been invited to commune with their Eternal Father in unison with all the host of divine messengers and other created beings.
“From one New Moon to another and from one Sabbath to another all flesh shall worship before me says Yahuah.” YashaYAHU (Isaiah) 66:23
But because of their idolatry and the hardness of their hearts, Yahuah at times in their history caused Israel to forget His New Moon’s, Sabbaths, and yearly Feast days. In each case, this was accomplished by causing them to go into captivity under the rulership of their pagan neighbors. It only took 50-100 years for Israel to lose sight of the oracles of truth they had been honored to protect all those many years.
I will also cause all her [Israel] mirth to cease, her feast days, her New Moons, her Sabbaths—all her appointed feasts. HosheYAH (Hosea) 2:11
Yahuah was like an enemy. He has swallowed up Yahisrael (Israel), He has swallowed up all her palaces; He has destroyed her strongholds, and has increased mourning and lamentation in the daughter of Yahudah (Judah). He has done violence to His tabernacle, as if it were a garden; He has destroyed His place of assembly; Yahuah has caused the appointed feasts and Sabbaths to be forgotten in Zion. In His burning indignation He has spurned the king and priest. Akhah (Lamentations) 2:5-6
Today, neither the nation of Yahisrael (Israel) nor the scattered Jews are worshiping according to the Creator’s true qadosh celestial timepiece in even one single unit of time.
Their “day,” which the Creator designed to be ruled by the brightness of the sun, they have changed to begin at “night” when there is no sun at all. They have done exactly what Yahuah asked them not to do:
“And the word of Yahuah came to Yirmeyahu (Jeremiah), saying, “Thus says Yahuah: ‘If you can break My covenant with the day and My covenant with the night, so that there will not be day and night in their season, then My covenant may also be broken with David My servant, so that he shall not have a son to reign on his throne, and with the Levites, the Kohen (priests), My ministers.” Yirmeyahu (Jeremiah) 33:19-21
“Thus says Yahuah, who gives the sun for a light by day, the ordinances of the moon and the stars for a light by night, who disturbs the sea, and its waves roar, Yahuah of hosts is His name. “If those ordinances depart from before Me, says Yahuah, then the seed of Israel shall also cease from being a nation before Me forever.” Yirmeyahu (Jeremiah) 31:35-36 NKJV
“To Him who made great lights, for His mercy endures forever. The sun to rule by day, for His mercy endures forever. The moon and stars to rule by night, for His mercy endures forever.” Tehilim (Psalms) 136:7-9 NKJV
From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same YAHUAH’S name is to be praised. Tehilim (Psalms) 113:3
For from the rising of the sun even unto the going down of the same my name shall be great among the Gentiles; and in every place incense shall be offered unto my name, and a pure offering: for my name shall be great among the heathen, said YAHUAH of hosts. Malachi 1:11
Modern Jewish Timekeeping
Modern Israel and the Jews follow two calendars instead of just one. These are the luni-solar calendar for their dark conjunction New Moons and Feast days; and the Roman Gregorian calendar for their weeks and Saturday Sabbaths.
As a result, they commence both the year and each month on a day not specified by Scripture. By extension this single error causes all the Jews’ New Moon days, Feast days, and Sabbath days to be out of sync with the worship rhythms of their Creator. And by extension they are desecrated, as outlined according to the LIGHTS of Creation. (Berashit (Genesis) 1:14-18) Might this signify that the modern Jews continue to remain in Roman captivity?
In closing, there is an old saying, “wishing for the moon.” But, have you ever wished for the New Moon or Sabbath to be over, that you might do some other activity of your choosing? I know I have in the past. As humans we can make many errors in respect to worshiping Yahuah. If honor, respect, and a heart felt worship is not constantly at the center of Yahuah’s set-apart qadosh New Moon, Sabbath, and Feast Days, we can find ourselves in the very same predicament as ancient Yahisrael (Israel). But the good news is that the more we learn of the Eternal YAHUAH, and how He sent His beloved Son to pay the price for sin on our account, the more the unaffected pure love will flow upward from our humbled and grateful hearts.
Praise YAHUAH and YAHUSHA! For “while we were yet sinners, YAHUSHA, YAHUAH’S only begotten SON died for us that we may each have an ETERNAL FUTURE!” Do you realize that each of the sacred qodesh events of Salvation were worked out for you and me upon the New Moon calendar? Isaiah 66:22-23 identifies that the same worship rhythm calendar model designed for obedient earthlings will be continued in the eternal home and earth made-new.
“For according as the shamayim (starry abode), the New Moons, and the earth: The New Moon that I fashioned and placed in this order was appointed for My chief corner [stone], declares Yahuah. Wherefore, it/they [the full New Moon & the Messiah] establishes and confirms your name and your descendants. “And it shall come to pass from its abundance— New Moon by New Moon you shall keep; and from its abundance— Sabbath by Sabbath you shall keep. It [the full New Moon] shall lead all flesh to prostrate in worship, according to My chief corner [stone],” declares Yahuah.” Isaiah 66:22-23 The Creator’s Calendar Version (Refer to article, New Moon by New Moon.)
